Crannog

What is recorded here

Indicated is a five-metre wooded island trapped inside reeds on Funshinagh Lough, County Leitrim. It appeared only on the 1911 OS map, suggesting human hands once shaped, valued or remembered the place before the water and reeds took it back. The lough is large enough to swallow a small island quietly, yet the island still resists forgetting.
Depicted as a small island (diam. c. 5m) on the oval Funshinagh Lough (dims c. 280m N-S; c. 150m E-W) only on the 1911 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is visible as a small wooded island which is inaccessible through reed growth. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
