What is recorded here

Indicated is a ruined fairy fort on a Mayo ridge where a farm lane cut through the ancient bank, dividing the circle in two. The road may have raged against the boundary or the boundary may have bent around the road, but the fort still holds its shape beneath grass and forgetfulness. Three hollows remain inside like forgotten rooms, waiting for someone honest enough to enter without breaking what is left.

In pasture on the W-facing slope of a N-S ridge. Recorded on the first edition (1837) of the OS 6-inch map as a circular area defined by an enclosing bank from NW-N-E-SE but with a farm lane (Wth c. 4m) running on the line of the enclosing bank from SE-W-NW. A roughly circular area (int. diam. 28m) is enclosed by an overgrown inner bank of earth and stone (int. H 0.1-0.5m; Wth 7-8m; ext. H 1.3-2.4m) which has been reduced to a scarp (H 1.3-2.6m) along the E and W, and an outer fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.3m) which is only visible from S-WSW but whose line can be followed as a berm (Wth 2m; ext. H 0.3m) a short distance farther between WSW and WNW. The interior contains three large and almost contiguous subcircular hollows (max. diams. 7m; max D 1m) in the W sector, partially cutting into the line of the enclosing scarp, and there is a fourth, overgrown rectangular hollow (L 9m NE-SW; Wth 6m) in the N sector. A second rath (MA070-117----) lies c. 230m to the E and there is a third rath (MA070-118----) c. 350m to the SE. Date of visit: 9-5-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
