Indicated is a fairy fort on a Mayo ridge, its oval scarps still holding the shape of a house that disappeared from later maps. Hawthorn and ferns choke the interior now, while local tradition whispers of an underground passage beneath the soil. The fort may have been a warning, a threshold, or a forgotten home, but it still stands above the pasture like a mark left behind.

In pasture, located on a rise on top of a ridge. Listed in the SMR (1991) and RMP (1997) as an enclosure on the basis of a circular feature visible on an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 685- 4). Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an irregular-shaped enclosure, with a rectangular vernacular house immediately to SE; indicated on the 1930 edition as a roughly oval enclosure. Raised roughly oval area (28m N–S; 20m E–W) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m at W), which is incorporated at N–E into a later field wall. Remnants of drystone walling on the external face, and on top of the scarp to W appear to be the result of relatively recent modification. A gap (Wth c. 2m) in the scarp at SE may be an original entrance. The interior slopes down gently from centre to SE. There is a local tradition of a Man-made underground passage (MA072-092001-) in the rath. Long grass and ferns grow in the interior; the perimeter is thickly ringed with hawthorn, ash with a few conifers planted on E side. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 21 May 2021
