Childrens Burial GroundChildren's burial ground · 1 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Childrens Burial Ground in Ballywinna is hidden under some field-clearance rubble, like it’s trying to hide from the modern world. It was on an old map, so it’s got street cred even if you can’t see it. Bring a camera and your most suspicious face; you never know what’s lurking.

Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Garracloon SouthFairy fort / stone ringfort · 412 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Garracloon South has caught my eye in Garracloon South, County Galway. I bet a fairy fort / stone ringfort with a name like that could keep me talking all afternoon; I'm already inventing a daft little scene for it, and I'll stop before it turns into history.

Childrens Burial Ground (Disused)Children's burial ground · 487 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Childrens Burial Ground (Disused) in Garracloon South is pretending to be a bush while hiding from the truth. It’s seen more fake royal visits than Buckingham Palace has had tea. A good place to forget your phone for ten minutes.

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in BallywinnaFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 496 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Ballywinna’s fairy fort is so overgrown the rabbits probably think it’s their personal jungle gym. McCaffrey saw half of it in 1952; the rest is a mystery to me. Bring a flask of something warm and a story to swap.

LisheenavillaFairy fort / stone ringfort · 630 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Lisheenavilla is an oval mess of old walls and a later field wall on top. Rumor has it kids are buried in there, so keep your voice down. Pop by and tell it it's looking well.

Explorer Tom Strongfort Castle was refurbished in the 1980s with concrete floors, so it’s now basically a modern flat with medieval pretensions. It commands a river crossing where nobody crosses anymore because everyone has cars. Ideal stop for a big stretch and a bigger yawn at the crenellations.
