Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a broken fairy fort in Mid Cork where a two-metre earthen arc still guards the northwest pasture. The rest vanished beneath grass and forgotten feet, leaving only a curved fence line to mark the circle. That much of a living boundary can disappear while one stroke remains suggests the field itself forgot the shape but never released the memory.
In level pasture, with land falling away to W and N. Hachured on 1902 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m). Arc formed by earthen bank (max.H 2m) survives to NW, incorporated into field fence system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
