Indicated as a small island in Aghakilconnell Lough (dims c. 370m NE-SW; c. 140m NW-SE) on the 1835 (diam. c. 10m) and 1911 (diam. c. 25m) editions of the OS 6-inch map. IndicatedFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 1511 yd

Explorer Tom Drumcromaun’s fairy fort handles nosy neighbours by growing grass over its face like a shy introvert. It sits on a drumlin, which is just fancy talk for a big hill. Bring a map, get lost anyway, that's the fun.

Sheemore Ambush MemorialMonument · 1.5 mi

Explorer Tom Sheemore Ambush Memorial in County Leitrim has an escape plan involving a ladder and a lot of luck. The first owner never used it, sadly. A proper spot for a flask of tea and a big think.

Finn McCool's MonumentArchaeological place · 1.6 mi

Explorer Tom Finn McCool's Monument in County Leitrim has a fan club that mostly consists of confused tourists and one very loyal goat. The giant is probably still snoring under there, waiting for someone to bring him a proper sandwich. Keep your voice down so you don't wake the legend.

Leabaidh DermotCave · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Leabaidh Dermot is a cave named after a guy, which is what happens when you can't think of anything better to name it. I bet the mother-in-law who designed it had very specific rules about who could sleep in it. Have a chat with it, nobody's watching.

bridge2.1 mi

Explorer Tom Bridge in Letterfine is stuck in a feud with two families over who owns the best view of the canal. The masonry is so good it could frame a painting, but the neighbors can't agree on the angle. Go in if you want to be caught in the middle.

Keshcarrigan Vocational SchoolCollege · 2.2 mi

Explorer Tom Keshcarrigan Vocational School holds the unofficial world record for the longest silence ever recorded in a classroom. The Georgian doors have been waiting for a student since the nineteenth century. Best enjoyed with a bag of crisps.

Castle JohnCastle · 2.6 mi

Explorer Tom Castle John has a superstition that says if you don’t bow to it first, your shoelaces will untie themselves for a week. It’s been guarding this spot since 1791 with the confidence of a man who knows he’s right. Ideal place to rehearse an excuse for being late.

Rusheen IslandIslet · 2.7 mi

Explorer Tom Rusheen Island in County Leitrim was the site of a love story where two guys fought over a boat and both fell in. The water is still salty from their tears, or maybe just saltwater, it’s hard to tell with this much fog. Linger, it's not going anywhere and neither should you if you want to feel sorry for them.

Otter IslandIsland · 2.7 mi

Explorer Tom Otter Island in County Leitrim would say 'I’m flexible' in a job interview and then immediately fall over. It’s got all the enthusiasm but none of the structure, which is exactly why it’s still here after centuries of being ignored by serious geologists. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard from the birds.

Shannon-Erne WaterwayVisitor information · 3.6 mi

Explorer Tom The Shannon-Erne Waterway was the result of a bad bet between two kings who couldn't agree on which river was more important, so they just dug through everything to prove a point. It’s a canal that feels like it’s still waiting for an apology. Tell it a joke, it's been a long time since anyone did.

Sit of Breifny CastleCastle, tower house · 3.6 mi

Explorer Tom Breifny Castle has an imaginary twin across the sea in New Zealand that sends it postcards every Christmas, though they never arrive because neither place exists anymore. It’s just a spot near the canal where the MacRaghnalls used to be very important and very loud. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think.

Declaration of IndependenceMemorial · 4.5 mi

Explorer Tom The Declaration of Independence memorial has a shortcut that isn't actually a shortcut because it just goes around in a circle, which is very poetic if you think about it too hard. Don’t overthink it though. Take a mate and argue about what it was for.
