Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished fairy fort in County Galway, Ireland, where quarrying and grading erased a 39m circular rath once marked by a stone-faced bank. It belonged to the busy world of fields, taking and forgetting. What remains is a absent shape, large enough to have held lives, meals, fears and stories, but no longer visible for them to point at.
In gently undulating grassland. When inspected in February 1985 this very poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 39m) was defined by a bank overlain by a field wall from S to SW; elsewhere a scarp formed the enclosing element. Traces of stone-facing were visible on the inner face of bank. Quarrying had encroached upon the monument from NE to E and from SW to NW. The current OSi digitalglobe imagery suggests that the monument has since been levelled. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 8 February 2019
