Immaculata Mount Alvernia

Two-storey house over basement, of mid 18th-century appearance, named 'Woodfort' on 1842 and 1905 OS 6-inch maps. Described by Smith (1750, vol. 1, 301) as 'a handsome house'; turret (14955) atop hill to S. Rendered with ashlar quoins- Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 321) states house was slated in front. Entrance front (S) of 7 bays: central 3-bay pedimented breakfront framed by ashlar quoins, oculus in pediment; central shallow ashlar porch with pediment flanked by rectangular sash windows. Two bays on either side of breakfront set back with single Wyatt window on ground floor. In 1906 extended by 2 bays on either side in similar style with pedimented tripartite windows in ground floor; at same time new mansard roof put on with attic lit by Wyatt dormer windows (Bence-Jones 1978, 286). Side elevations have central shallow projecting chimney stacks, with windows on either side. Rear hidden behind additions. Now functions as part of nursing home.
