Explorer TomIlchester's Heritage Centre, also called Ilchester Museum by its Town Trust, occupies the Town Hall complex on High Street: a modest doorway into a place that once had a much grander civic job. Come for Iron Age coins and Roman grooming tools, and stay to watch Tom try to appoint himself sheriff of the display case.
The Trust's museum tells Ilchester's story from before the Romans through Roman Lindinis and the town's medieval heyday. Among its objects are the key to a cell used for condemned prisoners and small Roman tools for cleaning nails and ears. Old photographs help pin those large periods to streets people still walk. The Trust cares for the museum and Town Hall together.
I reckon that cell key has heard more outrageous excuses than any pub landlord, although it has sensibly kept them to itself. My claim to the sheriff's badge is equally imaginary. The coins, tools and photographs need no invented career: they let you move from an ancient settlement to later local lives without pretending that every period left a grand monument above ground.
The Trust says the Heritage Centre opens seasonally on Wednesdays and the last Saturday of the month, but the exact dates on its public page are for 2025, so confirm the current calendar before travelling. A later Trust notice directed visitors through the Town Hall; check the current entrance signs when you arrive. Tours of the separate Roman cemetery require arrangement, and the Trust says no Roman remains are visible above ground there. Step outside afterward and let Ilchester's present streets finish the story.
