Inside the middle rampart of Mooghaun hillfort, a small hut stood before the great stone defences rose. People drove wooden stakes into the earth and cut a deep pit for a central post, creating a humble shelter in the southeast quadrant. They likely watched the horizon from that tiny structure, waiting for the day when strength would require a wall.

Situated inside the middle rampart in the SE quadrant of Mooghaun hillfort (CL042-074001-). A possible hut site, excavated in 1995 (licence no. 92E0093) as part of the North Munster Project of the Discovery Programme formed part of the first phase of occupation in this area before the rampart was built. It is suggested by the presence of a possible post-pit (diam. 0.8m; D 0.4m) and two clusters of stake-holes 2m away from the pit to the SW and SE.
