What is recorded here

Kilcaskan is a lost monastery hidden beneath a modern car park. St. Caskan may have taught monks inside round and rectangular huts beside the graveyard. Men and women still park there, driving wheels through chambers where prayer once echoed. The huts vanished under tarmac, but the sanctuary lives beneath the noise.

In 1992 several mounds, 'some round, some rectangular' were recorded in this field on the NE side of Kilcaskan Graveyard (CO103-003001-). Cork County Council has subsequently created a car park at this location and there is now no visible trace of these possible hut sites. According to local tradition, they were the remains of 'monks cells' when St. Caskan had a monastery here. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
