Hut site in Freahanes

Hut site

What is recorded here

Two adjoining hut foundations survive inside a rath at Freahanes, suggesting a small domestic cluster rather than a single isolated shelter. The arrangement implies people shared walls, heat and daily routine within a defended or bounded landscape. Whatever they kept, cooked or argued about has vanished, but the joined shape of their homes still breaks the grass.
In a rath (CO134-047----). Foundations of two adjoining hut sites (see CO134-047001-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
