Hut site in Cooleenlemane — Report the wrong picture

Cooleenlemane preserves a circular stone hut on a rounded hillock above the northern river valley, its porched entrance facing north and a tall slab set upright beside the gap. Sheep still graze the rough land around it, while a buried field boundary and narrow track suggest the spot remained part of a working landscape long after people stopped building there. The collapsed interior and radial stones hint that someone shaped a small, defensible room for storm, birth, or solitary thought before the valley filled with peat and memory.

The hut site is situated in an area of rough grazing at northern end of the Cooleenmane River valley on a small rounded hillock near the base of a west facing slope. The land use is predominately for sheep grazing. A tributary of the river is c30m to east and to the west are the remains of a narrow, grassy track running the length of the valley. A sub-circular hut built of random field stones with some laid radially and others contiguously. The external measurements are c.3.2m E-W; c.3.5m N-S with walls a maximum 07.m H and 0.7m W. The interior is full of collapsed stones. The entrance (0.9m W) is to the north and has a c.1.1m L porched entranceway extending from it. Just to the W of the entrance a slab of stone (H 0.9m; Wth 0.7m; T 0.15m) has been set upright on an E-W axis. There is a length (c. 15m) of field boundary c.18m to the west partially buried by peat, curving E-W and connecting with the old track. Compiled by: Tony Miller Date of upload/revision: 25 July 2023
