What is recorded here
One of three lost mountain huts still stands on the west slopes of Ballysitteragh, preserving a narrow twisting passage inside its thick stone wall. The small circular shelter faces rough pasture rather than a village, suggesting temporary seasonal use instead of permanent domestic life. Its surviving animal pen and hidden internal gallery create a compact trap for weather, movement and memory on the exposed peninsula.
In rough mountain pasture on W slopes of Ballysitteragh mountain. Three clochauns are marked here on the 1st edition of the OS map. Only 1 hut, with a rectangular animal pen adjoining its SW side, survives. It is a circular corbelled drystone structure with a lintelled entrance passage at ESE, and an L-shaped passage in the thickness of the wall at SSE. At its entrance, the latter passage is only .27m high x .36m wide, but it increases in height in the interior to at least .4m. It extends back into the wall for 1.2m and then swings W and continues along the line of the wall for an undetermined distance. D: 4.4m. H: 1.4m. T: 1.25m. A small lintelled chamber in the N corner of the adjoining animal pen may be associated with the mural passage, but the clochaun wall in this sector has been rebuilt and the relationship is uncertain.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1120. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
