Church in Baile Cainín

Cathair an Easpaig: There is a local tradition that a little church once stood on this spot. The present remains consist of a rectangular platform which measures 16m x 10m x .5 to .6m in height and which is bounded by field fences on its NE and SE sides. There are 2 hollows near the NE side of the mound and in one of these a short section of drystone walling is preserved. The latter is probably part of the wall of a clochaun which would have had an internal diameter of at least 4m. It is not clear from the surviving remains what this site originally consisted of or how it should be classified. The name and the presence of a hut site suggest that it was a cashel, but tradition suggests it was a church site. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
