What is recorded here
On a steep mountain pasture above Dingle Harbour, a circular drystone hut hides a vanished underground passage. A roofing slab still lies exposed beside the wall, and a rod forced beneath it strikes solid resistance two metres down, proving the tunnel once cut through the living rock. The entrance has vanished, perhaps swallowed by soil or sealed by later hands, but the chamber above and the buried shadow below suggest people dug through the hill to reach something worth keeping hidden.
Man-made underground passage described by Cuppage (1986, 393, no. 1113) as follows; 'On steeply-sloping, rough mountain pasture, overlooking the lower reaches of the Milltown river valley and Dingle Harbour. A circular corbelled drystone hut [KE043-085001-] with a lintelled wall chamber at NW and entrance at SW. It measures 5.25m in diameter internally, and its wall is 1.8 to 2.2m wide and up to 2.05m high. The wall chamber is 1.8m long x .72m wide x 1.45m high. The entrance to the Man-made underground passage (KE043-085002-) recorded within the hut (OSM and local information) is no longer visible. However, outside the hut to NW, a roofing slab is exposed on the surface, and a ranging rod inserted through the gap below this, extended c. 2m before meeting resistance. Two modern walls extending W from the hut have created an irregular passage leading up to the hut entrance'.
