What is recorded here
Clochán na hEaglaise stands as a circular corbelled drystone hut on a steep SE-facing mountain slope in County Kerry. A small chamber built against its exterior and a wide zig-zag track suggest deliberate human use rather than casual shelter. Local tradition claims mass was said here during Penal Times, though the cross-inscribed stone that might have proven it has never been found. The hut still holds that suspended possibility, half church and hermitage, waiting for belief to complete it.
Clochán na hEaglaise: On steep SE facing mountain slope. A circular corbelled drystone hut. D: 3.5m. H: 2.04m. Two wall niches in interior. A small, drystone chamber is built against the exterior, directly N of the entrance at NE. This is sub-rectangular in plan and is roofed by a series of flat slabs. It measures 1.4 x .8m x .65m high internally. There is a tradition that mass was said here in Penal Times (An Seabhac 1939, 227), but the possible cross-inscribed stone KE034-015002- recorded by the CKFC (1949) could not be located. Though the hillside is strewn with rock outcrop and loose scree, a wide, stone-free track leads downhill from the hut for c. 150m in a zig-zag manner, its downslope edge defined by a line of boulders and some upright stones.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1139. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
