Hut site in Ardagh (bear By.)

Half a kilometre southeast of the Martello tower, a low stone hut crouched on level ground, its walls half a metre thick and its door set centrally on the east side. The building measured just over eight metres north to south and seven metres east to west, large enough for a kitchen, a bedroom and a small working room. Whoever lived there would have faced the rising sun through that door, perhaps a keeper, a farmer or a soldier posted near the coast. The roof is gone now, but the foundations still mark the shape of an ordinary life lived beside a military tower.
