Hut site in Aghamore (rosclogher By., Glencar Ed)

Hut site

What is recorded here

A small stone circle, barely three metres wide, sits on the bare karst plateau in Aghamore. It is not a grand chamber or a towering mound, but a shallow spread of rock marking a place where people once lived beside death itself. A hundred metres away lies a wedge tomb, suggesting the living and the dead shared the same open sky. The hut may have belonged to keepers of that tomb, watching the seam between worlds from a ledge of white stone.
Situated on an area of exposed karst (dims c. 200m N-S; c. 130m E-W) that is fairly flat and is on a broad plateau which slopes down generally to the SE. This is a subcircular area (int. diam. 3.1m E-W; 2.1m N-S) defined by a stone spread (Wth 1-1.5m). It is partially overlaid by hut-site (LE006-030013-) and is located c. 100m NE of wedge tomb (LE006-033----). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
