This black commemorative plaque records: From Plymouth Sound on June 14 1585 Sir Humphrey Gilbert, "the father of British Colonisation", set sail for Newfoundland and which he claimed for Queen Elizabeth I on 5th August.

Sir Humphrey Gilbert was an English soldier, navigator, explorer, and colonizer who played a crucial role in establishing England's overseas empire; he is remembered for his attempts to found colonies in North America, notably claiming Newfoundland for Queen Elizabeth I.
