Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster

Place of death

What is recorded here

Hugh de Lacy died in Leinster, County Dublin, Ireland, after outliving the violent takeover of Ulster that made him famous. He marched into Ulaid in 1203, expelled John de Courcy, and received the earldom in 1204, yet he kept returning to the familiar soil of Leinster where his family had already built power. The north gave him a title; the south gave him a grave.
