Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Hoy, Braebister, Lower Cairn as Man-made underground passage (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Neolithic passage tomb; dates to the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 3500–2500 BCE). It is significant as part of a broader network of megalithic tombs in Orkney, reflecting complex funerary and ritual practices of prehistoric communities in northern Scotland.
