House

Nine acres at the island of Motres, or Mockeries Island, in South Wexford Harbour, had a value of 4 shillings and 6 pennies to the manor of Rosslare in 1325 (Hore 1920, 68). A house is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Forth at Island (17) where 6 acres were owned by Rowland Scurlocke in 1640 (Simington 1953, 307). An ancestor of Rowland’s, also called Rowland Scurlocke, had been a physician to Queen Mary Tudor (1553-8) and had been awarded the manors of Rosslare and Ballymore for his service (Hore 1920, 91-3).) The island is now attached to the Rosslare Intake and the precise location of this house is not known.
