The manor of Sampson was granted to Capt. George Trevelyan, a nephew of Lord Deputy Chichester, in 1613, and Chichester inherited it on Trevelyan’s death in 1620, by which time it was leased to Lord Annesley. A small castle of two and a half storeys and a court or bawn had been built in Ballyvoodock by 1621 (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987, 189). In the Civil Survey (1654-6) Lord Mountnorris owned a ruined castle in Ballyvoodock and had 1651 acres in Ballyvaldon parish in 1641 (Simington 1953, 47, 78). The land was in the townlands of Ballyconnigar, Knocknasilloge, Ballyvaldon, Kilnew, Ballintgowan, Garrymoyle, Kilmacot, Ballyvoddon, Ballyvoodock, Ballintubbrid and Ballynadrishoge.
