House

On a gentle S-facing slope. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the lands of Piers Butler of Ballynoran gent. and Irish Papist consisted of halfe a colpe and were bounded to the N with 'the lands of Ardcollum' and 'Uppon the sd halfe cope stands a thatcht house being the said Piers Butlers mansion house with other thatcht cabbinns and good quicksett hedges' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 270). Dovehill House may be an anglesised version of 'Ardcollum'. The house is abandoned house (Wth c. 6.9m) and only the W gable of a single storey structure is visible, with remains of a shallow slate roof. An outbuilding to the N and a range of outbuildings to the SW also survive. All the buildings were very heavily overgrown with brambles, rhodadendrons, wild hedges and ash trees at time of inspection. The house has pebble-dash render and concreted corners. Neither the interior nor exterior of the house could be accessed, however, the shape of the house is not suggestive of an early date. It is possible that the present house complex is on the location of an earlier one, however as the precise location of the 17th-century house is unknown it is unlocated within the townland.
