According to Brennan (1854-5, 214-15) Richard Bermingham, whose graveslab (TS071-003004-) dated 1672 is in the graveyard (TS071-003002-) of Cloneen church (TS071-003001-), lived in a 'mansion or castle of Ballyhomick [which] partially existed in ruins till lately, when the very foundations were uprooted to build the house of John Martin, a neighbouring farmer. In the excavation some ancient fire-places were found in the basement story of the castle, still containing ashes, apparently of the stone coal of Slieveardagh'. Recorded in the SMR (1992) and RMP (1997) as 'Dwelling site possible', the 17th-century house in Ballyhomuck had been tentatively located to the house indicated as 'Cloneen Ho.' on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1904) ed. 6-inch OS map, it being the main house in the townland. On field inspection in 2004 this house appears to be post-1700 in date. The precise location of the 16th/17th house is unknown within the townland.
