House

On the summit of Bailey beag mound (MA023-014031-). Françoise Henry (1945, 140; House I) noted a ‘few erect slabs on the E side of the Bailey beag’, which she suggested were the remains of a house similar to those found on nearby Bailey Mór mound (MA023-014003-), and she added that ‘the contents of a hearth had slipped on the slope. Two pig-fibula pins were found amongst them.’ A rough cairn of stones (c. 3m N-S; c. 3m E-W; H 0.6-0.7m) now caps the summit of the mound, incorporating a few upright slabs, which may be in situ remnants of the house. It is likely, however, that many of the large slabs lying on the slopes of the mound derive from this house or other structures, which once stood on the mound and have collapsed downslope due to erosion.
