What is recorded here
Situated on a rise in gently undulating pastureland. A late seventeenth/early eighteenth-century house in ruinous condition (int. dims. 18.2m x 7.1m; T 0.8m) composed of randomly coursed limestone rubble with cut-stone window surrounds and quoins. The quoins are revealed beneath the rendering and show some evidence of drafting. The ground and first floors remain up to a height of c. 6m, while the upper storeys were knocked 30-40 years ago when it was about twice its present height according to the landowner. The front façade on the E side is completely destroyed. The gable walls extend beyond the W crossing-wall indicating that this was a double-pile house or that a high bawn wall (TN040-010001) was attached to the W part of the house, as at Piedmont House, Co. Louth (Buckley and Sweetman 1991, 370). The fireplaces in the middle of the N and S gables project into the main body of the building. The S fireplace has cut stone around the opening and later brick infill while the N fireplace has been largely destroyed. Evidence of large windows with wooden lintels occurs in the niches on either side of the projecting fireplaces in both the N and S gables. There is an offset (Wth 0.13-0.15m) along the W wall 1.4m above the present concrete floor. Also in the W wall are a number of windows with wooden lintels, some of which have been infilled.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
