House

House, fortified house

What is recorded here

Deriniskill, a fortified house hidden within Kilphierish, appeared on a 1654 map but vanished from every later survey. It may have been built in the early 1600s as a sharp-edged warning against local unrest. The earth has since swallowed its stones, leaving only a name and a ghost of a wall.
The precise location of Dorosnekilly Castle has not been identified within the townland of Kilphierish. Castle type building depicted on the 1654-9 Down Survey map of Piercetown parish (NLI, MS 723-4) which is not depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Building depicted in 'Deriniskill' on 1654-9 Down Survey map of Rathconrath barony (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of the Down Survey parish map of Piercetown recorded that improvements 'on Clunygrosse & Derriniskill on each a House' (ibid.) The referenc to the recent improvements would suggest that this building may have been built as a fortified house in the early 17th century.
