Housatonic

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Housatonic as Steam Tanker (period Unassigned)-(1908). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The *Housatonic* was a steam tanker built in 1908; it was sunk on 29 June 1863 by the Confederate submarine *H.L. Hunley* during the American Civil War, off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. The wreck is historically significant as the *H.L. Hunley* became the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat, though the *Housatonic* itself was not the target.
