Hope Edge is a sea cliff composed primarily of Carboniferous limestone, formed around 340 million years ago through the accumulation of marine sediments. The cliff is notable for its exposure of durable limestone strata, which are significant for understanding the geological history of the Durham region and the processes of coastal erosion.
