What is recorded here
Tober Dooney stands in Inisloughlin, County Antrim, a small water source marked only as a holy well with no certain date or owner named. The name itself suggests dooney, a basin or hollow place where water gathers, and holy implies people once believed the water touched something larger than ordinary rain. Perhaps a mother dipped a cloth there for a feverish child, or a traveller knelt to drink before crossing rough land. The well does not need a monument because water keeps doing what it has always done, giving life back to whoever arrives thirsty.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as HOLY WELL: TOBER DOONEY. Recorded period: UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Linked to Saint Dooney, the well is traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, particularly for curing eye ailments and general wellness. Local folklore suggests that the water was once carried in procession to Lough Derg for blessing, reflecting its spiritual significance in early Christian traditions.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
