Holy well in Shanagolden Demesne

Known as St Senan's Well and 'situated in this churchyard (LI019-012002-), but was closed up by the casting in of gravel and other rubbish' (Ó Danachair 1955, 215). According to Spellissy (1989 173) 'was frequented as a pligrimage site into the early nineteenth century.' holy well associated with St Senan, a 6th-century Irish saint known for founding monastic settlements along the west coast of Ireland. The well was traditionally visited for its healing properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin, and was likely a site of pilgrimage and ritual before its closure in the mid-20th century.
