Holy well in Castlegarden: Tobaratoo or Tober Keeran, recorded near Castlegarden Bog about two kilometres southeast of the Tullaherin tower, still belongs to the margin where marsh, water and memory blend. People may have gone there for cleansing, blessing or simply relief from fever and fear. The well does not need a grand monument; it needs recognition as a living ritual place, not a forgotten dot on an old map.

The OS Letters (1839) mention a holy well, ‘called Tobar Chiarain (Tober Keeran) in Castlegarden Bog about one and half miles [c. 2.4km] from the [round] tower [of Tullaherin KK0024-062004-]’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 262 (85-9)). This reference may refer to a holy well which is indicated as, ‘Tobaratoo’ (KK024-086----) on the 1st (1839) OS 6-inch map and on the 1899-1902 revision is roughly 2.4km SE of the round tower and is located on the edge of marshy terrain in Castlegarden townland. The holy well at Castlegarden, known as Tobar Chiarain or Tober Keeran, is associated with Saint Kieran, a 6th-century Irish saint known for his asceticism and miracles. Traditionally, the well was visited for healing and to seek protection, with offerings such as coins and ribbons left at the site as tokens of gratitude.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
