Holy well in Ballinteskin (rathdown By.)

Unlocated holy well within the townland of Ballinteskin. According to Lynch (1994, 641) there is a holy well known as ‘St Brigid’s Well’ in the townland of Ballinteskin that is mentioned in the 1930s Irish Folklore Commission, Schools Manuscript Collection (IFC S 907: 154-7). The folklore manuscripts recorded the tradition that the ‘water of it collected in a bottle by holding the bottle against the stream at a point where the water trickles into a rivulet is believed to be a cure for vomiting’ (Lynch 1994, 641). Linked to St Brigid, the well was traditionally associated with healing and fertility, with pilgrimages and offerings recorded in folklore. It was noted by the Irish Folklore Commission in the 1930s as an active site of veneration.
