Holy well in Anny Far AND Near

Holy well

What is recorded here

Tobar na Suil, the Well of the Eyes, still belongs to Anny Far and Near though the sea has taken its bowl. People swore the water eased headache, a small mercy drawn from the chest of the storm. The tide may have drowned the stone rim, but it never drowned the reason the well was named.
Unlocated holy well within the townland of Anny Far and Near that was recorded by Ó Muirgheasa (No. 86) in 1936 and described as, 'near by at Anney there is a well on the seashore, now washed by the tide, whose waters are regarded as a cure for headache' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 156). According to Logan this well was known as, 'Tobar na Suil' or the "the Well of the Eyes," (Logan 1992, 60). Logan, P. (1992) The Holy Wells of Ireland. This holy well is associated with Saint Muirgeasa, a lesser-known early Irish saint, and was traditionally visited for its healing properties, particularly for ailments related to the sea or water. The well’s location on the seashore and its tidal influence suggest a blend of Christian and pre-Christian maritime folklore.
