What is recorded here
Holst Victorian House at 4 Clarence Road, Cheltenham, is the Regency house where composer Gustav Holst was born in 1874 and lived until 1882. His daughter Imogen helped turn it into a museum in 1975. Period rooms, family possessions and Holst's piano now connect his childhood with the domestic lives of later Victorian residents.
Why it was built
The terraced house was completed around 1832–33 as part of Regency Cheltenham, decades before Gustav Holst's family occupied it and gave it musical importance.
People and work
Holst was born here on 21 September 1874 and lived in the house until age seven; he later composed The Planets and taught music for much of his career.
How it changed
After use by several families and twentieth-century lodgers, a campaign led by Imogen Holst helped open the birthplace as a public museum in October 1975.
What survives
Eight period rooms remain with a working range, Regency drawing room, family objects, Holst's gramophone, music chest and the piano donated by Imogen.
Why it mattered
The house preserves both one composer's beginnings and an unusually complete view of ordinary Regency and Victorian home life beyond the famous birth room.
