HMS Royal Oak was a British Royal Navy battlecruiser sunk by a U-boat torpedo off Orkney, Scotland, on 14 October 1939, during the early stages of World War II. The attack killed 833 crew members and had significant impact as one of the first major British naval losses of the war, prompting changes in naval security practices.
