HISTORIC SETTLEMENT: PORTAFERRY in Ballyphilip; Portaferry

HISTORIC SETTLEMENT: PORTAFERRY

What is recorded here

Portaferry, meaning landing place of the ferry in Irish, has forced thousands of people across a narrow strip of water because the road refused to bend. That simple repetition built a village where a boat, not a bridge, decided the shape of daily life. The ferry still runs every thirty minutes, carrying half a million people between two places close enough to see but separated by water that will not ask permission.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as HISTORIC SETTLEMENT: PORTAFERRY. Recorded period: LATE-MED; C17TH; C20TH; POST-MED; C19TH; C18TH. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
