This blue commemorative plaque records: In 1905 this house became the Lewes Road Hospital. Opened by Dr Helen Boyle it was the first in England to care for poor women suffering nervous breakdown. In 1912 it moved to larger premises in Hove. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Brighton & Hove.
Dr Helen Boyle established the Lewes Road Hospital in 1905, pioneering mental health care for underprivileged women in England; the hospital relocated to larger facilities in Hove in 1912 to accommodate growing needs.
