What is recorded here

Two adjacent pits, discovered during test-trenching, were excavated in 2001 in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass. The first bowl-shaped pit (diam. 0.4m; D 0.1m) was circular in plan and its fill consisted of black charcoal. The second bowl-shaped pit (c. 0.8m N-S x 5m E-W; max. D c. 0.1m), situated 0.05m to the E, was oval in shape and was filled with a mix of red/brown burnt clay with charcoal flecking. The surrounding natural clay had been burnt red. These adjacent pits were interpreted as a hearth and a charcoal sample from this returned dates of 2920-2560 cal. BC and 2520-2500 cal. BC (Murphy 2001b, 16-17).
