Harriett May Nicholls blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Harriett May Nicholls 1884 - 1965. Pioneering local politician who challenged public welfare in Northampton. First elected to Northampton Town Council in 1932, Nicholls became the town's first female alderman (1945) and then the first female mayor (1947-49). Dedicated to improving conditions for the working class, she helped found the maternity ward at St Edmund's Hospital, as well as establishing new homes for older people. She lived at 79 Southampton Road in Far Cotton for much of her life. Recorded plaque organisation: West Northamptonshire Council.
