Knockaulin holds a Neolithic habitation site where Western pottery sherds, arrowheads and polished axes still scatter beside Dun Ailinne. The nearby pit burial suggests people did not merely pass through; they lived, hunted, broke vessels and died there. What is certain is that the ground retained domestic debris instead of erasing it. What is missing is the voice of the person who last held one of those axes.

Sherds of Western Neolithic pottery, a scatter of arrow and javelin heads and several polished stone axes - indicative of possible settlement debris - were found during the archaeological excavations of Dun Ailinne, a ceremonial enclosure (KD028-038001-). A pit burial (KD028-038005-) was also excavated.
