Explorer TomGrove House Gardens sits in central Dunstable with an eighteenth-century house at its shoulder and quite a lot more mischief on its lawns than the name suggests. Walk past flowers and old trees, then spot sculptures made from a retired Vauxhall car; apparently even the metal has decided to take a pleasant afternoon off.
The green space began as part of the Grove House estate and now belongs to the town, open for walks, play and community events. Mature trees from its private-garden years stand alongside newer planting, including dawn redwood and tulip tree. Daffodils and tulips start the spring show; roses and dahlias take over in summer. The Women’s Institute tends a flowerbed, so the garden’s colour is renewed by local hands as well as by the seasons.
Four metal sculptures by Nicola Daley use recycled car parts to celebrate Dunstable themes: Watling Street’s Roman past, the Priory Church, gliding on the Downs and BMX riding at Grove Skate Park. Look also for wooden animals carved from old tree stumps and the red lightning-bolt tribute to David Bowie’s appearance at Queensway Hall. Children have an inclusive play area with a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, seesaw and talking tubes. Even the sculptures seem to have joined the game.
The town council manages this public garden and uses its covered performance area for free community concerts and events. Accessible paths and benches make a short visit easy to shape, while nearby Grove Park parking is about five minutes away on foot. Check the council’s event notices if you want music with your stroll. Otherwise, follow the sculptures around the lawns and let Dunstable reveal how many stories can fit into one garden.
