Greyfort Cottage stands on a low rise above pastureland in County Tipperary, though the castle it replaced has never been found. In 1654 a survey called it a thatch house beside a castle stumpe, suggesting stone walls still broke the grass when people lived there. The cottage may have swallowed the castle or merely neighbour it, but either way it turned military ruin into domestic life.
Situated on a low rise of ground in undulating countryside with extensive views of pastureland. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as one 'thatch house a stumpe of a castle & six cottages' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 336) and depicted as a large multi-gabled dwelling with possible chimneystacks rising above the roofline on the 1654-7 Down Survey barony map of Lower Ormond (NLI MS 721). This dwelling may be the 'thatch house' described in the Civil Survey. On this map the dwelling is shown located close to the townland boundary with Ballyhaden and standing in close proximity to the N bank of the stream running through the townland of Greyfort. No visible remains of medieval castle in the vicinity of Greyfort House. It has been assumed that 'Greyfort House' was built on the site of the medieval castle. However it is possible that the medieval castle was located elsewhere within the townland of Greyfort. The precise location of this castle has not been identified.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
