Grey Abbey

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grey Abbey is a ruined Franciscan graveyard in County Kildare where Gerald FitzGerald, 5th Earl of Kildare, was buried. Founded in 1260 by William de Vesci and completed by Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Offaly, the monastery likely produced the original Kildare poems manuscript in the early 1300s. The stones still stand beside the burial ground, preserving a quiet link between medieval faith, noble death and Irish poetry.
