Greenbank Gardens

Greenbank Garden is the sort of place that makes your own flowerpots feel they ought to apologise. Beyond Glasgow's Southside suburbs, a walled garden unfurls colour and ideas beneath tall beeches; arrive with a modest gardening ambition and it may leave you planning a botanical takeover of the kitchen windowsill. The house and walled garden were built in the 1760s for Robert Allason. The National Trust for Scotland is direct about how he made his fortune: he was a Glasgow tobacco merchant and slave trader. That history belongs in the visit alongside the beauty. After the American Wars of Independence, Allason went bankrupt and lost the estate. The garden's later life has turned the place into an inspiration for today's growers. There are more than 3,600 named kinds of plants here, including a National Collection of bergenias. The beds are arranged to give domestic gardeners ideas they can actually carry home, even if your own garden is approximately the size of a postage stamp. Look for daffodils and bluebells in spring, then see how the planting changes later in the year. Woodland paths offer a change of pace when your head is full of ambitious planting schemes. This is a managed National Trust for Scotland attraction, with admission charges and published opening times for the garden, café and woodland walks. Check the current visitor page before travelling, particularly as seasons change. Take time to read the estate's difficult beginnings as well as admire what grows there now; both are part of the real Greenbank. Then go home and try to persuade one small pot to behave like 3,600 plants.
