Great Ganinick is part of the Isles of Scilly, a group of islands with a history dating back to prehistoric times, and has been recorded in maps since at least the 16th century. It is notable for its small size and its inclusion in historical surveys of the Scilly archipelago, which has long been a focus for maritime and archaeological study.
