Great Cockup has an elevation of approximately 691 metres and is part of the Lake District mountain range in northern England. It is composed primarily of volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the Ordovician period, typical of the region's geological history. The hill is valued for its scenic position and contributes to the cultural and recreational landscape of the Lake District National Park.
