Graveslab in Killeigh

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Maximilian O'Dempsey, Viscount Clanmaliere, died on 30 November 1690 and lies beneath a graveslab in the Killeigh graveyard south of the Franciscan Friary. His stone joins three other late 17th century slabs in that quiet ground, marking a family that held power in Offaly at the end of a turbulent century. The plain words on his marker preserve his name and rank long after the politics that shaped his life faded from memory.
Four late 17th century graveslabs located in the graveyard to the S of the Franciscan Friary (JKAS vol. 9, 1918-22, 23-32). Graveslab belonging to Maximillian O'Dempsey in the graveyard at Killeigh bears an inscription that reads 'Here lyeth the body of Maximilian O'Dempsy Lord Viscount Clanmaliere who departed the 30th of November Anno Domini 1690' (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 146).
